Publishing with TUM.University Press

The publishing portfolio of TUM.University Press includes monographs, edited volumes, conference proceedings, dissertations and textbooks. We reserve the right to select titles and conduct a suitability assessment.

Our Services at a Glance

TUM.University Press offers different forms of publication: You can publish a classic print edition, which is distributed via the book trade. We can also publish a digital edition of your work on mediaTUM, the TUM institutional repository. Digital publication follows Open Access guidelines, which means publications can be accessed worldwide without technical or financial constraints, and the full text can be downloaded as a PDF file. This is an important factor in ensuring that the titles gain maximum visibility. Simultaneous print and digital publication is of course also possible. Our authors are free to decide how they would like to publish.

The Benefits for You in Overview

Author-friendly publication contract
One of our core objectives is to provide you, the author, with optimal support in your work. To this end, we have designed the publication contract in such a way that you authorise us only the rights to your work that we actually require for publication. Authors often have to relinquish a whole cluster of rights of use to publishers.

Profit-sharing for authors
You will receive revenues from your print publication. The actual amount of the royalty per book sold depends on the configuration, scope and price of your publication and will be stated in the offer. The royalty is invoiced annually starting from an amount of € 20. Should your annual income fall below this amount, it will be credited to your account and added to the next statement. If there are multiple authors, please specify a single account number for disbursing royalties.

Requirements for Publication with TUM.University Press

In order to publish your work with TUM.University Press, you will need to meet the following criteria:

You, or at least one of your co-authors, are a member of TUM.
Your edited manuscript has a layout that is suitable for the book and of high design quality. A quality check is carried out by the publisher.
You have obtained or purchased the rights of use for all illustrations used in the manuscript from the copyright holders and documented this in writing. The authors are responsible for obtaining the reprint rights and the correct picture references.
You provide us with print-ready and edit-free data in PDF format. We will provide you with specifications and information on the correct preparation of your print data.
You conclude a publication contract with us for the transfer of the necessary rights of use and setting of deadlines, costs, remuneration, etc. In the case of a project with several authors, one of the authors must be named as the contact person for the publisher and a bank account for the transfer of any royalties accruing.

Your Digital Publication

If you publish a digital edition of your work with TUM.University Press, we can offer you the following services:

Design of a title page for the PDF according to the official design guidelines for publications by the university publisher
Checking of your inside layout for design quality
Digital publication on the mediaTUM repository (Open Access) and listing of the publication in the TUM.University Press collection with cover and, if applicable, reference to the print edition
Inclusion of the publication on the publisher's website
PDF full text display with download option
URN/DOI assignment: mediaTUM assigns an individual URN (Uniform Resource Name) / DOI (Digital Object Identifier) as a permanent identifier for your publication.
Visibility through full text indexing: mediaTUM offers full text indexing for all documents stored on the media server. Full text and associated metadata can be searched and displayed via search engines and meta-repositories. This ensures maximum visibility for your Open Access publications among potential readers around the world.
Verification of all titles in the German National Bibliography and fulfillment of legally required delivery to the German National Library
Export web service: Publications on mediaTUM can automatically be integrated on the homepages of workgroups or institutes and thus conveniently retrieved.
Integration of additional materials: Additional materials such as videos, audio files, statistical data or other raw data from your research activities can be linked to publications.

Your Print Publication

If you publish a printed edition of your work at TUM.University Press, we can offer you the following services:

Conclusion of an author-friendly publication contract
Design of the book cover in consultation with the author, according to the official design guidelines for publications by the university publisher
Checking of your inside layout for design quality
Coordination and handling of technical book production
Assignment of an ISBN number, also an ISSN number if a series is launched
Making print publications available to the book trade
Inclusion of the publication on the publisher's website
Notification of the publication on the list of available books, availability of the publication for order by dealers and customers, delivery to bookshops with the usual market discounts
Verification of all titles in the German National Bibliography and fulfillment of legally required delivery to the German National Library
Share of authors in sales revenues with annual billing

Book Formats

We recommend choosing one of the following standard book formats for the publication of scientific works:

14.8 cm x 21.0 cm (DIN A5)
21.0 cm x 29.0 cm (DIN A4)
17.0 cm x 24.0 cm

In exceptional cases, special formats can also be produced.

Print Production

The publisher currently offers you the two most common types of print production. With cost-effective print-on-demand production, books are not produced until an order is received. This means that there are no major preliminary costs in financing a print run. Print-on-demand can also deliver very good quality, but the options are not as variable as with traditional print run production in terms of paper, format and binding.

A predetermined number of copies (from approx. 500 pieces) is produced. Production must be financed in advance. The total costs can be high depending on the materials and volume required. Since copies have to be stored after production, there are additional costs.

Remarks on Existing Series and Publication of Individual Titles

Titles that appear in the following series are assigned an appropriate series layout:

TEXTBOOKS – Coursebooks

THESES – Dissertations and Postdoctoral Theses

PROCEEDINGS – Conference Proceedings

WORKING PAPERS – Project Reports

Scientific writings that cannot be assigned to any of our current series, such as the documentation of research projects or courses, appear as individual titles. The design guidelines for book covers are less restrictive in the case of individual titles.

The Cover Design of University Publishers' Publications

After consultation with you, we will design a professional cover for your print publication or a title page for your PDF. In order to achieve high recognition value for TUM publications and to ensure a consistent quality of cover design, we follow a professionally developed design template based on the guiding principles of TUM's corporate design. The publishers’ frame layout offers scope for individual title design in conjunction with fixed elements that characterise the publisher's publications as belonging together. Each of our series has a particular series design.

Costs

On the basis of your publication’s key data, we will prepare an individual offer for you that clearly details the exact costs for publishing services and printing. Costs arise from the following elements:

Publishing services: A publication fee per title is initially charged by the publisher. The flat rate depends on the individual form of publication and also includes the professional production of a book cover.
Printing: In the case of print run production in offset printing, in addition to the basic production costs, there are staggered prices for the production of printed copies based on the quantity purchased. In the case of print-on-demand production, costs are only incurred for the copies actually required, which you as the author can purchase at a predetermined rate.
Manuscript optimisation: Optional costs for external proofreading, translation, graphics and typesetting services. The publisher plays only an intermediary role.
There are no costs for digital publication beyond the publication flat rate.

Publication Contract

The cooperation between TUM.University Press and you as author or editor is stipulated in a publication contract. In the case of multiple authors, an author chosen by the group will act as the contact person for the publisher. He or she is responsible for communication regarding the book project.

Responsibility for obtaining reprint rights and correct picture references lies with the author or editor.
