To support the visibility of research in the best possible way, the TUM Board of Management, the University Library, and the TUM Schools have jointly established the financial foundation for entering into comprehensive Publish & Read agreements with academic publishers. These contracts provide TUM members with the opportunity to publish their research results Open Access, with Open Access fees centrally managed by the University Library.

For publications not covered by the Publish & Read agreements, you have the option to apply for a publication grant through the Open Access Publication Fund [1].

Recommendation for CC BY
We recommend publishing your Open Access articles in academic journals under a Creative Commons CC BY license [2] whenever possible and avoiding the “Non Commercial” (NC) license component. American Chemical Society (ACS)

Duration: 2024 - 2025

TUM has entered into a Publish & Read agreement with the American Chemical Society (ACS), offering TUM members special conditions for their open access publications.

The following services are available through the University Library:

  • Reading Access
    At TUM, you have access rights to almost the entire journal portfolio of ACS [5].
     
  • Open Access Publishing
    As a "Corresponding Author" affiliated with TUM, you have the opportunity to publish your papers as Open Access in almost all ACS journals. There are no costs for you personally for Open Access publishing. APCs (Article Processing Charges) are covered by TUM and handled through the TUM University Library. If you opt for additional services (e.g., for color illustrations or extra length) with the publisher, ACS will invoice you directly for those expenses.

American Institute of Physics (AIP)

TUM has extended its participation in the national Publish & Read consortium with the American Institute of Physics (AIP), offering TUM members special conditions for their open access publications. Starting in 2024, the expanded conditions now include publishing options in Gold Open Access Journals.

The following services are available through the University Library:

  • Reading Access
    At TUM, you have access rights to almost the entire AIP journal portfolio [8].
  • Publishing in Hybrid Open Access Journals
    As the corresponding author affiliated with TUM, you have the opportunity to publish your papers as Open Access in almost all hybrid journals from AIP. Please note that only articles that have been allocated a CC-BY license are covered by the agreement. There are no costs for you personally for Open Access publishing. APCs (Article Processing Charges) are covered by TUM and handled through the TUM University Library. If you opt for additional services (e.g., color illustrations or extra length) with the publisher, AIP will directly invoice you for those expenses.
  • Publishing in Gold Open Access Journals
    As the corresponding author affiliated with TUM, you can also publish in AIP's Gold Open Access Journals [9] – at no cost to you personally. The APCs (Article Processing Charges) for these ten journals will be covered by TUM and handled through the University Library. Important: If you plan to submit to one of these journals, please contact our Open Access Team [10] first.

TUM has extended its Publish & Read agreement with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for 2024. TUM members benefit from special conditions for their open access publications.

    At TUM, you have access rights to almost the entire journal portfolio of ASME [14]. Starting in 2024, we will also offer you access to the society's proceedings.

The University Library of the Technical University of Munich participates in Cogitatio‘s Institutional Membership Programme. Therefore, corresponding authors of TUM are entitled to publish their articles Open Access in all journals [21] from Cogitatio. Authors do not incur any costs for the Open Access publication.

In order to ensure that all publications can be clearly assigned to the Technical University of Munich, it is important that all TUM authors use their TUM email address and the binding, standardised university affiliation. Company of Biologists

Duration: 2022 - 2026

TUM has entered into a Publish & Read agreement [22] of the Company of Biologists, offering TUM members special conditions for their open access publication.

The following services are available through the University Library:

    At TUM, you have access rights to almost the entire journal portfolio of the Company of Biologists [23], including its archive back to 1852.
  • Open Access Publishing
    As a "Corresponding Author" affiliated with TUM, you have the opportunity to publish your papers Open Access in almost all journals from Company of Biologists. Electrochemical Society – ECS Plus

Duration: 2018 - 2025

TUM participates in ECS Plus [27], a consortium of the Electrochemical Society (ECS). Therefore, TUM members are entitled to publish their articles in Electrochemical Society [28] journals under the Open Access model, free of charge, and without limitations on the number of articles. This applies to both corresponding authors and co-authors.

And here's how you proceed:

  • Use the ECS Online Workflow [29] to submit your article.
  • Start by selecting the "Open Access" option,
  • then click on "ECS Plus",
  • and enter "Technische Universität München (TUM)" in the "Your University" field.
  • Finally, select the Creative Commons license "CC BY".

Elsevier

Duration: 2024 – 2028

TUM is participating in the nationwide DEAL agreement [31] with Elsevier, negotiated on behalf of the Alliance of Science Organizations and the German Rectors' Conference. In addition to the Elsevier journal portfolio, the agreement also includes the brands Cell Press and The Lancet.

The following services are available through the TUM University Library:

  • Reading Access
    At TUM, you have online access to almost the entire journal portfolio of Elsevier [32], including titles from Cell Press and The Lancet. This includes reading rights for current issues and archival access to back volumes.
     
  • Open Access Publishing
    As the "Submitting Corresponding Author" affiliated with TUM, you have the opportunity to publish your papers as Open Access in almost all journals from Elsevier, Cell Press, and The Lancet. There are no costs for you personally for Open Access publishing. APCs (Article Processing Charges) are covered by TUM and handled through the TUM University Library. If you opt for additional services (e.g., for color illustrations or extra length) with the publisher, Elsevier will directly invoice you for those expenses.

Exempt from the Agreement
Some journals published by Elsevier on behalf of learned societies and academic associations are not covered by the DEAL contract. In these cases, the societies have not agreed to include their journals in the Publish & Read agreement. Among those are titles such as "Blood" or "Blood Advances" from the American Society of Hematology.

Duration: 2024 - 2026

TUM is participating in the Open Access program KOALA Mathematics and Computer Science [41]. In this way, we are contributing to the transition of the following six journals to Diamond Open Access.

Microbiology Society

Duration: 2022 - 2027

TUM is participating in the Publish & Read program of the Microbiology Society, which allows TUM researchers to publish an unlimited number of Open Access articles.

The following services are available through the TUM University Library:

  • Reading Access
    At TUM, you have online access to nearly the entire journal portfolio of the Microbiology Society [44]. This includes reading rights for current issues and archival access to older volumes dating back to 1947.
     
  • Open Access Publishing
    As a "Corresponding Author" affiliated with TUM, you have the opportunity to publish your papers as Open Access in almost all journals from the Microbiology Society. Nature

The Nature Publishing Group has been part of Springer Nature for several years. Under a DEAL agreement with the publishing group [45], TUM members already enjoy special publishing conditions for Gold Open Access journals, including the so-called "Nature branded journals". However, hybrid journals from the Nature portfolio were covered by the DEAL agreement. To close this gap, we have concluded an additional Publish & Read contract, providing TUM members the opportunity to publish in all Nature branded journals.

The following services are available through the TUM University Library:

    At TUM, you have access rights to the entire portfolio of Nature branded journals [46].
     
  • Open Access Publishing
    As a "Corresponding Author" affiliated with TUM, you have the opportunity to publish your papers as Open Access in all Nature branded journals.     As a corresponding author affiliated with TUM, you have the opportunity to publish your papers Open Access in Sage's Hybrid Journals [57]. There are no personal costs involved for you as the author – unless you opt for additional services with the publisher, for which Sage will directly invoice you.

SciPost

TUM is a partner of the publication portal SciPost [59], a platform for Open Access publications. SciPost is run by and for scientists.

The SciPost journals [60] offer TUM scientists another opportunity to publish open access independently of commercial providers. Please note the guidelines [61] for authors.

Springer Nature

Duration: 2020 - 2028

TUM is participating in the DEAL agreement with the Springer Nature [62] publishing group, negotiated on behalf of the Alliance of Science Organizations and the German Rectors' Conference. The agreement also includes brands such as Adis, BioMed Central, or Palgrave Macmillan as well as the Gold Open Access journals from Nature. Excluded are the hybrid journals from the Nature Portfolio, for which TUM has made a separate agreement [63].

The following services are available through the TUM University Library:

  • Reading Access
    At TUM, you have online access to almost the entire journal portfolio of the Springer Nature Group [64], including titles from imprints such as Adis, BioMed Central, or Palgrave Macmillan. This includes reading rights for current issues and archival access to back volumes.
     
  • Open Access Publishing
    As a "Corresponding Author" affiliated with TUM, you have the opportunity to publish your papers as Open Access in almost all journals of the Springer Nature Group. There are no costs for you personally for Open Access publishing. APCs (Article Processing Charges) are covered by TUM and handled through the TUM University Library. If you opt for additional services (e.g., for color illustrations or extra length) with the publisher, Springer Nature will directly invoice you for those expenses.

Exempt from the Agreement

  • Hybrid Journals from the Nature portfolio are not included in the DEAL contract with the Springer Nature Group. For this, TUM has reached a separate agreement, allowing us to provide you with reading access and Open Access publication options for these titles as well. More information [63]
  • Also excluded are magazines (e.g., Scientific American, Spektrum der Wissenschaft) and technical journals (e.g., ATZ, MTZ).
