Citation Guide

Citing correctly and avoiding plagiarism: Our citation guide will show you how to do it. Students will find answers to basic questions about citations here, and for doctoral students and researchers FAQs provide relevant information.

Even if you, as a supervisor, have to decide which instructions for citing you give to your students, the Citation Guide can still be used as a basic work. It is coordinated with the Ombudspersons for Good Scientific Practice at the TUM Compliance Office [1] and is officially recommended as a guideline for the TUM.

Contents of the Citation Guide

  • Fundamentals: The Citation Guide explains, on the basis of copyright law and the rules for good scientific practice, why, what and when to cite.
  • FAQs: Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about quoting images, unpublished sources, research data, student papers, co-authors and much more.
  • Recommendation for citation styles: Different types of citations are explained (author-year, numeric, footnote), for each type of citations a citation style is recommended.
  • Reference management programs: Various software is presented, as well as information on their availability at TUM.
  • Checklists: Here you will find checklists which help to quote protected works correctly and to organize tasks during your thesis project.
