The "Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities" is one of the milestones of the open access movement. In 2003, it was adopted by 19 German and international research organisations. Since then more than 500 universities and academic institutions worldwide have signed the declaration. On 7 May 2015 the TUM joined as no. 508 the list of signatories.
