The tasks of the University Library include, in particular:

- identifying media and information needs
- acquiring the required media and other information resources to the necessary extent in accordance with available funds
- fully recording the acquired media in the University Library’s catalog
- ensuring consistent shelving and good availability of the library holdings
- supplying literature not available in the University Library’s own collection through interlibrary loan and document delivery services
- In its branch libraries
- making library holdings accessible
- offering study spaces, group rooms and multi-purpose rooms for TUM students
- In the area of consultation and training
- providing an information service (first-level hotline) for all customer inquiries
- delivering a needs-oriented training program in both on-site and online formats
- In the area of bibliometrics
- supporting citation-based performance reports and evaluations
- In the area of research infrastructure
- operating a technical infrastructure for research data management
- offering training and consultation on research data management
- supporting TUM researchers in all matters related to research data infrastructure
- technically operating the TUM research information system and providing user support in its ongoing operation
- In the area of publication support
- providing the institutional repository of TUM
- compiling and publishing the TUM university bibliography
- running TUM.University Press, the publishing arm of TUM
- publishing and archiving doctoral dissertations and habilitation theses in electronic form
- offering financial and organizational support and advice for publishing in open access
