The Technical University of Munich (TUM) has received funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) under the "Open Access Publication Funding" program for the years 2025 to 2027. This allows us to relaunch the Open Access Publication Fund. Applications for publication grants can be submitted starting February 2025.
TUM is committed to achieving the highest possible Open Access rate and actively supports researchers in financing Open Access publications. As a TUM member, you benefit from Publish & Read agreements with leading publishers and professional societies, as well as – starting in 2025 – publication grants from the newly relaunched fund.
Funding Eligibility
To qualify for support from the Open Access Publication Fund, the following conditions must be met:
- The corresponding author is a member of TUM (with TUM listed as the primary affiliation).
- The publication is a research article.
- The article is published in a pure Open Access journal, not covered by TUM's Publish & Read agreements.
- The journal is listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
- The article is published under a CC BY license.
- The article's publication date is on or after 1 January 2025.
Grant Amount and Application Process
The Open Access Publication Fund provides a grant of €1,000 per article. Corresponding authors or their respective institutions (e.g., chair, professorship, or institute) are responsible for paying the publisher's invoice for the total publication costs. They can then apply for a grant from the publication fund. Due to tax regulations, reimbursements are made directly to the institution, not to individuals.
Details on the application process and funding conditions will be available on the publication fund website starting February 2025.
Recommendation for CC BY
To receive grants from the Open Access Publication Fund, publication under a Creative Commons CC BY license is mandatory. Furthermore, we recommend publishing your Open Access articles under a CC BY license whenever possible and avoiding the "Non-Commercial" (NC) license component. For further information on the benefits of the CC BY license for scientific publications, please visit the DEAL Consortium website. A detailed legal overview is provided in the Practical Guide to Using Creative Commons Licenses.
