The Technical University of Munich is one of the leading sponsors of open access in Germany. On the platform of the Open APC Initiative, universities and major research institutions share their expenditure on open access publication fees, also known as Article Processing Charges (APC), as Open Data. For 2017, the University Library was able to register 307 articles with a total cost of 434,375 euros for the TUM, which were published with financial support from the TUM Publishing Fund.
In Germany last year, only the Max Planck Society supported more open access articles, so that the TUM leads the field of universities ahead of Göttingen, Heidelberg, Erlangen-Nuremberg and Leipzig.
The Open Access Publishing Fund is available to all TUM members. In addition, university members receive discounts and reductions on author fees through membership in open access initiatives and through agreements with selected publishers.
