Open Access

Scrabble stones forming the term "open access"

Open access stands for unrestricted access to scientific information. In its Open Access Policy, TUM invites all scientists at the Technical University of Munich to publish their research results Open Access. We support you in doing so by covering publication fees as part of comprehensive agreements with publishers, offering consultation services, and providing with mediaTUM an institutional repository for Open Access publication and self-archiving.

Open Access Strategy

To support the visibility of research in the best possible way, TUM has significantly expanded its infrastructure in literature provision and publication services. Through a joint effort, the TUM Board of Management, the University Library, and the TUM Schools have established the financial foundation to substantially increase the proportion of TUM's Open Access publications. Starting in 2025, the budget will be further supplemented by DFG funding secured for Open Access publishing.

With the adoption of the TUM Open Access Policy, the TUM Board of Management encourge all researchers to publish their scientific findings in line with the principles of the Open Access movement. Moreover, TUM is a signatory of the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities.

Open Access Publishing Opportunities

As a TUM member, you benefit from a wide range of Open Access publishing opportunities. The Publish & Read agreements TUM has signed with leading publishers and academic societies allow you to publish your research findings Open Access at no personal cost. For articles in Open Access journals that are not covered by these agreements, you may apply for a publication grant through the TUM Open Access Publication Fund.

In addition, TUM.University Press offers an in-house alternative for publishing monographs and edited volumes, as well as launching Open Access journals, independent of commercial publishers.
