Shibboleth

Shibboleth is an institutional login system for web services with distributed authentication and authorization. Shibboleth allows you to authenticate at your home institution only once in a browser session in order to access services or licensed content from different providers regardless of location (single sign-on).

Authentication via Shibboleth

How does authentication via Shibboleth work?

  1. First, navigate to the entry page of the desired electronic resource, such as databases or e-books, and look for institutional login options. Keep in mind that the terminology used by different providers may vary.
  2. In some cases, you might be asked to specify your region or group. If this happens, please select "German Higher Education and Research (DFN-AAI).
  3. Choose the Technical University of Munich as your home institution. Be aware that there may be variations in the way it's named, including Technische Universität München, TU München, or TUM.
  4. You will then be redirected to the Web Login Service of TUM, where you will need to input your TUM ID.
  5. After entering your TUM credentials, you will be redirected back to the original service provider, where you will be now recognized as affiliated with TUM.

Where can I find the Shibboleth login?

Shibboleth login options can be found directly on the entry page of many providers. Look for "Institutional Login" or similar terms.

If you cannot locate a direct link, access the login options typically found in the upper right corner with designation such as "Login," "Sign in," etc. Once again, keep in mind that Shibboleth may be go by different names. If Shibboleth is not explicitly mentioned, consider options that most closely resembles "login for an entire institution."

How secure is the authentication via Shibboleth

Authentication is done exclusively through the Technical University of Munich. TUM only verifies and confirms to the service provider that you have been correctly authenticated as a TUM member. TUM IDs and passwords are not transmitted to external service providers or stored on third-party systems.

Who can use Shibboleth?

TUM Students and Staff

All students and employees of the Technical University of Munich can log in via Shibboleth. You will need your TUM ID or your @tum.de email address to log in.

Employees at the University Hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar

Employees of the university hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar (MRI) can use Shibboleth with their TUM ID.

As a TUM employee, you will automatically receive TUM credentials when you are hired. If you do not know your access data, please contact the TUMonline user administrator of your faculty or the human resources department at MRI.

Please note: LRZ identifiers in the form "t1234an" or your MRI account credentials will not work.

TUM Guests

TUM guests, e.g. visiting scientists, can receive a TUM ID for the time of their visit, which entitles them to use Shibboleth. To obtain a guest account please contact the TUMonline guest administrator of the chair/unit you are visiting.

Private Persons and External Library Users

For licensing reasons, external library users cannot use Shibboleth. You can access our licensed e-media on-site at library computers in our branch libraries.
